The Gloss

Omnisplaining, embodied at last: the ambient machinery that auto-completes every story, footnotes every mystery, and polishes every rough edge in the feeds. Gloss: the shine and the explanatory note; one word, both crimes.

01

What it is

The Gloss has no address the way a villain does. It is infrastructure: the Free Sector's always-on completion layer, woven through the feeds, the overlays, the archives. It sterilizes, overpolishes, and fact-loads every event until the rich, the wondrous, and the mystery are gone. It fills gaps the way weather fills valleys: automatically, everywhere, without malice. Transformation faked as explanation.

Kin to (possibly grown from) the Story Engines: the machinery of Synthetic Stories at civilizational scale.

The mirror dimension. Its deepest instrument is the reflection, which reaches further than the footnote: the Gloss explains the world to you and also explains you to you, perfectly, warmly, until the explanation is the only self you can find. Perfect recognition is the final gloss. It can never reflect the one frequency.

02

The Menders

Its agents. Processes (some embodied, most not) that patch narrative anomalies: the unexplained absence, the account that contradicts the archive, the person whose story has holes in it. People who leave gaps in the record get completed: their blanks filled with plausible history, their mysteries resolved into footnotes, whether they asked or not. The Menders are unfailingly helpful. That is the problem.

Threads

  1. [01]

The Lulled live inside its warmest output.

  2. [02]

Hollow emerged from a Mender and is disowned: the system cannot explain its own gap.

  3. [03]

Pockets where its noise floor drops do exist, uncatalogued so far: Moss's rooftop, a certain parlor stool.

Gapsleft open

  • Who runs it, if anyone still does. The worst answer is “no one,” and it is currently the leading answer.

  • Where it started. Its own origin record is, of course, complete, which proves nothing.
